and that is confirmed by the Almighty’s words:

“Fight them; Allah will punish them at your hands, disgrace them, grant you victory over them, and heal the breasts of a believing people (14) and remove the fury from their hearts.” (Qur’an 9:14–15)

A hadith has also been transmitted stating that the oaths taken by archers are deemed idle speech, incurring neither expiation nor any sin for breaking them. Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī (1) gave this the heading: “Chapter: The dropping of expiation in…"

—as well as Sulayman ibn Musa → Makhul → Abu Salam → Abu Umamah → Ubadah, some narrating the report in full, others in abridged form. It was recorded by Ibn Abi Asim, al-Jihad, no. 7; al-Shashi, Musnad 3/no. 1176 (full version); al-Tirmidhi, no. 1561 (abridged); Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Ilal 1/no. 1003; Ibn Hibban 11/no. 4855; al-Bayhaqi 9/57; and others. Dawud ibn Amr also transmitted it through Abu Salam → Abu Idris al-Khawlani → the Prophet ﷺ, in full; this version is found in al-Bukhari’s Tarikh 8/57. Al-Bukhari deemed this route the sounder one, saying: “Dawud has the better memory,” i.e., compared with Makhul; therefore the hadith is mursal (the Companion link is missing). There are additional isnads attributed to Ubadah that are not reliable. (1) Fadl al-Rami, no. 29, and al-Muʿjam al-Saghir 2/271, no. 1151. The report is spurious; it is solely narrated by Yusuf ibn Yaqub from his father. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar comments in Lisan al-Mizan 6:424–25, under Yusuf’s entry: “He settled in Egypt; his status is unknown. He produced a false report with an otherwise unobjectionable isnad” (he then cites this very hadith) “and concludes that the fault lies with either Yusuf or his father, for Ibn Uyaynah never related it.”
