Futyā fī Ṣīghat al-ḤamdIbn al-Qayyim

Another well-known report states:

“O Allah, to You belongs all praise, and to You belongs all sovereignty. In Your hand is all good, and to You all matters return, both public and secret. You are worthy of praise” (1).

This is among the most comprehensive and finest expressions of praise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his community both simple and multiplied forms of praise, yet none of what he taught them included the formula of praise under discussion.

In Sahīh Muslim, Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “Teach me words that I may say.” He replied, “[Say] (2): ‘There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. Allah is supremely great, and abundant praise belongs to Allah. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. [There is no] power nor strength except through Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise.’”

The man said, “These are for my Lord; what is there for me?” He replied, “Say: ‘O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me’” (3).

= in Shu‘ab al-Īmān, no. 3779. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is gharīb through this route, and its chain of transmission is not strong.” Al-Albānī graded it weak in al-Da‘īfah, no. 2918, and Da‘īf al-Jāmi‘, no. 1214. (1) Reported by Ahmad, 5/396, no. 23355, and al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’, no. 1746, from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Mundhirī, in al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb, attributed it to Ibn Abī al-Dunyā’s Kitāb al-Dhikr; al-Suyūtī, in al-Habā’ik, attributed it to Muhammad ibn Nasr’s Kitāb al-Salāh. It was graded weak by al-Mundhirī, al-Haythamī in Majma‘ al-Zawā’id, 10/96, and al-Albānī in Da‘īf al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb, 1/478, no. 963. (2) Omitted from the manuscript; I have restored it from Sahīh Muslim. (3) Reported by Muslim in his Sahīh, Book of Remembrance and Supplication, no. 2696.
