Futyā fī Ṣīghat al-ḤamdIbn al-Qayyim

In Sunan Abī Dāwūd, ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah reported:

A young man from the Ansār sneezed while praying behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: “Praise be to Allah—abundant, pure and blessed praise, until our Lord is pleased and after He is pleased, concerning the affairs of this world and the Hereafter.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished praying, he asked: “Who said those words?” The young man remained silent. Then he asked again: “Who said those words? He said nothing wrong.” The young man replied: “O Messenger of Allah, I said them, intending nothing but good.” [He said] (1): “They did not stop short of the Throne of the Most Merciful—exalted be His mention.” (2)

In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad, Wāʾil ibn Hujr reported:

I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and a man said: “Praise be to Allah—abundant, pure and blessed praise.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished praying, he asked: “Who said that?” The man replied: “I did, O Messenger of Allah, and I intended nothing but good.” He said: “The gates of heaven were indeed opened for those words, and they were not

= Hajar, who said: “The answer is that there is no contradiction between the two accounts. Rather, his sneeze may be understood to have occurred when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head. Nothing precludes his referring to himself without naming himself in order to conceal his deed, or his being left unnamed because one of the narrators forgot his name. The remaining differences amount only to additional details that the narrator may have omitted for brevity.” (Fath al-Bārī, 2/334). (1) Omitted from the manuscript and restored from the source texts. (2) Reported by Abū Dāwūd, no. 774, and through him by al-Baghawī in Sharh al-Sunnah, no. 727; Ibn al-Sunnī in ‘Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah, no. 264; and Ibn Abī ‘Āsim in al-Āhād wa-l-Mathānī, no. 325. Al-Hāfiz attributed it to al-Tabarānī and Ibn al-Sunnī, stating that its chain of transmission was acceptable (al-Fath, 10/616). Al-Albānī graded it weak in Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd, no. 162.
