While we were praying with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man said: “Allah is truly most great; abundant praise belongs to Allah; and glory be to Allah morning and evening.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Who said those words?” The man among the people replied: “I said them, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “I marvelled at them: the gates of heaven were opened for them.” Ibn ʿUmar said: “I have never ceased saying them since I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say them.” (1)
In the Sunan collections, Rifāʿah ibn Rāfiʿ reported:
I prayed behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sneezed, so I said: “Praise be to Allah—abundant, pure and blessed praise, as our Lord loves and is pleased with.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished praying, he turned and asked: “Who spoke during the prayer?” No one answered him. He asked a second time: “Who spoke during the prayer?” Rifāʿah ibn Rāfiʿ replied: “I did, O Messenger of Allah.” He asked: “What did you say?” He replied: “I said: ‘Praise be to Allah—abundant, pure and blessed praise, as our Lord loves and is pleased with.’” He said: “By Him in whose hand is my soul, thirty-odd angels raced to be the first to carry those words up (2).”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a good hadith.” (3)
