‘Utayba (1), who said:
“When Allah revealed to David, ‘Work, O family of David, in gratitude. And few of My servants are grateful’ [Saba’: 13], he said: ‘My Lord, how can I give You due thanks (2), when You are the One who bestows blessings upon me, then grants me gratitude for those blessings, then grants me blessing after blessing? The blessings come from You, my Lord, and so does the gratitude. How, then, can I give You due thanks?’ He said: ‘Now you have come to know Me, O David’” (3).
Who, then, can give his Lord the thanks He deserves—glory be to Him—let alone repay Him?
From this we can appreciate the worth of the words of praise authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “Our Lord, never adequately recompensed, never forsaken, and never dispensed with,” and their superiority to the hadith being asked about.
