Ibn al-Qayyim—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “He, exalted is He, is the Creator of both good and evil. Evil is found in some of His creatures, not in His creating and acting. For that reason He, glorified be He, is far removed from injustice, whose reality is to place something where it does not belong. He places things only in the locations that befit them, and that is pure good. Evil, by definition, is to place something where it does not belong; once it is put in its proper place it is no longer evil. Hence it is clear that evil is not attributable to Him.” End quote.
I say: The opening words of Shaykh al-Albani warrant reconsideration, for excluding evil from the acts of Allah—exalted is He—implies that evil has a creator other than Allah, and this is the doctrine of the Magians and the Qadariyyah. Allah the Exalted has said, “Allah is the Creator of all things” (Az-Zumar 62); and, “Is there any creator other than Allah…?” (Fatir 3); and, “We test you with evil and with good as a trial” (Al-Anbiyaʾ 35). This noble verse explicitly refutes the view of those who claim that evil is not from Allah’s doing. Similar is His statement, “We tried them with blessings and with hardships so that they might return” (Al-Aʿraf 168)—blessings meaning favors and hardships meaning calamities; and His saying, “If a blessing befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah’; but if a misfortune befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you.’ Say: Everything is from Allah” (An-Nisaʾ 78); and His saying, “When Allah wills harm for a people, there is no turning it back; they will have no protector apart from Him” (Ar-Raʿd 11); and His saying, “Say: Who is it that can shield you from Allah if He intends harm for you or intends mercy for you?” (Al-Ahzab 17); and His report of the jinn: “We do not know whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends for them what is right” (Al-Jinn 10). Ibn Kathir—may Allah have mercy on him—commented: “This is part of their refined speech: they attributed evil without naming the agent, while they attributed good directly to Allah.” End quote.
He, exalted is He, also said: “Say: Shall I inform you of something worse than that as a recompense with Allah?—those whom Allah has cursed…”
