—and his distilled conclusion from al-Bukhari is as follows: Ibn al-Qayyim maintained that most—indeed all—of the reports explicitly mention Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, mention only the family of Abraham, or mention Abraham together with the family of Abraham. Ibn Hajar replied, “He failed to notice what is found in Sahih al-Bukhari, as has already been cited in the ‘Stories of the Prophets,’ under the chapter on Abraham (upon him be peace). It is reported through the chain of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿIsa ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, with the wording: ‘just as You sent blessings upon Abraham and upon the family of Abraham; You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious,’ and the same wording occurs in the phrase ‘just as You bestowed favor.’”
The hadith master then listed further narrations outside al-Bukhari that likewise combine the mention of Abraham and the family of Abraham. It seems clear that Shaykh al-Albani derived his objection to Ibn al-Qayyim from Ibn Hajar’s remarks, as indicated by his citation in the footnote on page 128 of Fath al-Bari when presenting the various answers to the question raised by the phrase “just as You sent blessings upon Abraham and the family of Abraham.” All those answers—and the critique of Ibn al-Qayyim—occur in the very same passage. Had al-Albani attributed the objection to its original author, that would have been more becoming and more appropriate than claiming it for himself.
