al-Tanbihat ala Risalat al-Albani fi al-SalahHamoud ibn Abdallah At-Touwaïjri

Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “I saw Ahmad raise his hands at the time of bowing (rukuʿ) and when rising from bowing, with a raise identical to that at the opening of the prayer, the hands level with his ears. At times he would make it slightly lower than the initial raise.”

Hanbal said: “I heard Abu ʿAbd Allah, and a man asked him about raising the hands in prayer. He replied, ‘It is reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through several channels, and from his Companions, that they did so when commencing the prayer, when intending to bow, and when lifting their heads from bowing.’ I asked him, ‘What about between the two prostrations?’ He said, ‘No.’ I asked, ‘And when going down for prostration?’ He said, ‘No.’ ʿAbbas al-ʿAnbari then said to him, ‘O Abu ʿAbd Allah, is it not narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did that?’ He answered, ‘These other reports are stronger and more numerous.’”

This narration is the most widely transmitted from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him). The overwhelming majority of Hanbalis, early and late, have adopted it, and it is the official position among their later scholars. Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in his Jamiʿ as Ahmad’s view and did not cite any other opinion from him. The supporting evidence for it in rigorously authentic and sound hadiths is exceedingly abundant, but this is not the place to list them. A number of them were already presented under Notice Six.

The second report states that the hands are to be raised in four instances: the three just mentioned, and a fourth when one rises after the first tashahhud.

This was the preference of the Imam, Shaykh al-Islam Abu al-ʿAbbas Ibn Taymiyyah; of his grandfather Abu al-Barakat; of the author of al-Fāʾiq; and of Ibn ʿAbdus in his Tadhkirah. Ibn Muflih wrote in al-Furūʿ, “It is the clearer position,” and his grandson affirmed the same in al-Mubdiʿ. Al-Mardāwī stated in al-Insāf, “It is the correct view.” Shaykh al-Islam Abu al-ʿAbbas Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) also related that it is the opinion of a group of
