and when he raised his head from bowing, and when he went down in prostration, and when he lifted his head from prostration, bringing both hands level with the lobes of his ears.
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā reported to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us; he said: Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Naṣr ibn ʿĀṣim, from Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him): that he saw the Prophet ﷺ raise his hands… and he recounted the same wording.
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā also told us; he said: Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us; he said: my father related to me, from Qatādah, from Naṣr ibn ʿĀṣim, from Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet ﷺ, whenever he entered the prayer…—he transmitted a similar report but added, “When he bowed he did the same, when he raised his head from bowing he did the same, and when he raised his head from prostration he did the same.”
These are anomalous variants recorded only by al-Nasāʾī; the leading imams transmitted the narration without this anomalous addition. Concerning Shuʿbah’s version, al-Bukhārī—may Allah have mercy on him—in his monograph on raising the hands said: Abū al-Walīd Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik and Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb both related to us, saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Naṣr ibn ʿĀṣim, from Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ, when he pronounced the opening takbīr, raised his hands, and when he bowed, and when he raised his head from bowing.
Al-Bukhārī likewise said: Ādam ibn Abī Iyyās related to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Naṣr ibn ʿĀṣim, from Mālik ibn al-Ḥuwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands when he pronounced the opening takbīr, when he bowed, and when he lifted his head from bowing, until they were in line with his ears.
