and spinning parables for it, he toys with the People of the Sunnah and banishes them altogether from the sphere of knowledge. He never digs into any of their inner matters(1) without that inquiry betraying you, nor examines any doctrine(2) without leaving you uneasy. They have clothed themselves in the darkness of caprice(3) and been stripped of the majesty of guidance, so eyes turn away from them(4) and hearts recoil. It has even become common talk among the Muslims ⦗349⦘ that their leader, ʿAli ibn Ismaʿil al-Ashʿari, used neither to perform istinjāʾ (post-toilet purification), nor wuḍūʾ (ablution), nor the prayer(5).

(1) In the printed edition it reads la tanqur (do not peck). (2) The passage enclosed in brackets is an addition found in manuscripts S, T and in Dham al-Kalam. (3) In Dham al-Kalam it reads al-haz’ (mockery). (4) i.e., to distance oneself and withdraw. See Mukhtar al-Sihah by Abu Bakr al-Razi, p. 644 (under naba). (5) I suggest that Abu Isma’il al-Harawi probably based the popular attribution of this ruling to Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘ari on his unpublished manuscript Dham al-Kalam (vol. 6) and on what al-Dhahabi records in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ (vol. 16, p. 478), namely: “I heard Yahya ibn ‘Ammar report from Zahir ibn Ahmad—who served as imam—that he said: ‘I looked into a sewer opening and saw Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘ari relieving himself there. When I entered, the time for prayer had come, and he stood and prayed without wiping or performing wudu (ablution). When I mentioned the need for wudu, he replied, ‘I am not a muhadith (hadith scholar).’ I thought he must have forgotten.’ ” Although this account implies a breach of certain Islamic etiquettes—unlikely for a Khurasani shaykh—it does not substantiate the allegations against Abu al-Hasan for three reasons: (i) the isnad is broken, since Zahir died in 289 AH and Yahya ibn ‘Ammar in 422 AH (a ninety-year gap); (ii) the report itself indicates that he prayed, contradicting claims that he did not pray; (iii) al-Dhahabi attributes the incident to mere forgetfulness, which in fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) suspends ritual obligations until one remembers, and a person may legitimately require privacy to relieve oneself, even if circumstances sometimes prevent it. Hence, a general statement and a categorical judgment on a specific individual demand careful verification and evidence.
