the Muʿtazilah for the doctrines they have invented and the Sunnah and reports they have contravened (1), they retort by censuring you for the very same. If you accuse them (2) of disparaging the early generations and the leading scholars, they in turn accuse you of exactly that. Whatever you blame them for—opposing the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus—they blame you for its like. You have no escape from this except by renouncing the innovations you share with them, as well as those you introduced on your own. Only then will the Book, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah’s earliest generations and its Imams remain free of contradiction and conflict, securely preserved. Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed We will preserve it.” (3)
In sum, most of what the Salaf and the Imams condemned and faulted the Muʿtazilah for—discourse that clashes with the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the ancient consensus—you possess in even greater measure. At times you are (4) more at odds with these sources than the Muʿtazilah themselves. You have even joined them (5) in the very roots of their misguidance, by which they abandoned the Salaf and the Imams of the Ummah and flung the Book of Allah behind their backs. They affirm none of Allah’s attributes, nor do they declare Him transcendent of anything on the basis of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, or the consensus; rather, they claim that certifying the soundness of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus (6) depends on a prior knowledge obtained outside them, for such knowledge, they say, cannot come from them lest circularity arise. Thus they fall back on nothing but their own opinion in that matter (7). When they cite the Qur’an, it is only for reinforcement and corroboration, not for primary reliance.
