the clear dictates of reason; yet you censure those who maintain that Allah speaks with letters and sounds that are pre-eternal. It is plain that what you have asserted is further removed from both reason and revealed law than that view. Granted, discerning people have rejected the latter as well, but your claim is even more objectionable—indeed, it strays farther from the truth than the Christian formula, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—one God.”

Still more astonishing is your statement that if this single, undivided meaning is expressed in Arabic it is the Quran, if in Hebrew it is the Torah, and if in Syriac it is the Gospel. Every rational person knows beyond dispute that when the Torah is rendered into Arabic its meanings are not those of the Quran, and that when the Quran is translated (1) into Hebrew its meanings are not those of the Torah.

Moreover, some of you say that this abstract meaning can be heard, while others insist that it cannot; and you have reduced Allah’s conversation with Moses to the level of the inspiration He grants to others, claiming: “He created within Moses a subtle faculty by which he perceived the speech subsisting in the Divine Essence.”

Yet the Exalted has said:

“We have indeed revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him; We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon—and We gave David the Psalms (163)—and to messengers We have mentioned to you before and messengers We have not mentioned to you; and Allah spoke to Moses directly” (2).

Here the Almighty distinguishes between His revelation to the others and His direct speech to Moses.

He, the Most High, also said:

“It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger who then reveals, by His permission, whatever He wills” (3).

Once again He differentiates between His act of revealing and His speech from behind a veil.

(1) The objective is to render its meanings, not its literal letters, which is impermissible according to scholarly consensus. See the Shaykh’s remarks on translating the Qur’an in his book Naqd al-Mantiq, pp. 97–99; and al-Zarkashi, al-Burhan fi Ulum al-Quran, 1:465–466. (2) Surah al-Nisa, verses 163–164. The original reads ’alayka bil-haqq wa-rusulan (“upon you is the truth and messengers”), which is erroneous. (3) Surah al-Shura, verse 51.
