Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

with a different intention (8), such as the remembrance of Allah. We have explained this in detail elsewhere (1).

Our point is that you cannot affirm what the Muslims (2) affirm, for in your view the letters and arrangement of the Quran do not constitute the speech of Allah. Rather, you regard them as created—whether in the air, in the very soul of Gabriel, or somewhere else. Consequently, you and the Muʿtazilah are agreed that the letters and structure of the Quran are created. Yet they (3) [maintain that this] (4) is the speech of Allah, whereas you say that it is not (5). If anyone among you does claim that it is the speech of Allah, his argument against the Muʿtazilah collapses, so that on this issue the Muʿtazilah are in a stronger position than you.

According to you, the letters and arrangement the people now recite are merely a narration of those created letters and that created arrangement—exactly as the Muʿtazilah say—and they are but an expression of the eternal meaning that subsists in the Divine Essence.

For this reason Ibn Kullāb declared, “This Quran is a narration (ḥikāyah) of the primordial meaning.” Al-Ashʿarī disagreed, arguing that a narration resembles the thing narrated, whereas here we have letters and there we have pure meaning. Al-Ashʿarī therefore said, “Rather, it is an expression (ʿibārah) of that meaning, for an expression does not resemble the thing expressed.” Both views, however, are mistaken.

The Quran that we recite contains composed letters and contains meanings. We pronounce the letters with our tongues and comprehend the meanings with our hearts. The relation of the meanings present in our hearts to the meaning that subsists in Allah’s Essence is like the relation of the letters we articulate to the letters that, according to you, are created.

(1) This is the opinion of the Shaykh – may Allah have mercy on him – on this issue. See Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, vol. 21, pp. 268, 269, 459–463; and vol. 26, pp. 190–191. Scholars – may Allah have mercy on them – have disagreed on whether one may recite a verse or part of a verse while junub (in a state of major ritual impurity). For details, consult: al-Insaaf (The Just Measure) by al-Mardawi, vol. 1, p. 243; Kashf al-Qina‘ (Unveiling the Veil) by al-Bahuti, vol. 1, pp. 168–169. (2) In S and Ṭ it reads “yaqulu” (he says). (3) In S and Ṭ it reads “lakinna qalu hum” (but they said “hum”). (4) The text in brackets is an addition from S and Ṭ, required by the context.
