of this ummah; they set their reason against the reason of the negators, and their experiential unveiling against the unveiling claimed by the negators (1). Yet their reason and their unveiling are the sound ones, and for that very reason you find them unwavering, constantly increasing in knowledge and guidance, as the Exalted says: “While those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their God-fearingness” (2).
As for the others, you will find them only growing in bewilderment and misguidance; the end (3) of their affair is sheer perplexity, and they even glorify that perplexity. Indeed, the ultimate product of the “rational” scale by which they claim to weigh the Quran and the sunnah obliges confusion, until they declare the Lord to be simultaneously existent and nonexistent, affirmed and negated (4). Thus they describe Him both with attributes of being and of non-being, while in truth they incline to negation, depicting Him with the qualities of what is lifeless or altogether nonexistent. The goal of their mystical unveiling, their tasting, and their witnessing is likewise bewilderment.
Yet because they must affirm something, they portray Him as a state (5) indwelling within created things, or they equate His very existence with the existence of the creatures. Consequently, the final outcome of the Jahmiyyah’s reasoning is that they worship nothing at all, while the end of their unveiling and experiential taste is that they worship everything.
