—and also through the chain of Qatadah, from Abu Ayyub, from Abu Hurayrah.

Ibn al-Qasim (1) reported: “I asked Malik about someone who relates the hadith, ‘Allah created Adam in His image,’ and the hadith, ‘Allah will uncover His shin on the Day of Resurrection,’ and that He will place His hand in the Fire until He brings out (2) whomever He wills. He rejected this most vehemently and forbade anyone (3) to relate it.”

I say: Both of these hadiths were narrated by al-Layth ibn Saʿd. The first—concerning the image—he transmitted from Ibn ʿAjlan (4), and the second appears in the hadith of Abu

(1) In S and Ṭ: from Ibn al-Qāsim. He is Abū ʿAbd Allāh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim ibn Khālid ibn Junāda al-ʿUtqī, the reliable imam and jurist of Egypt. He studied under Mālik ibn Anas and died in 191 AH. See Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ, Tartīb al-Madārik, vol. 3, pp. 244–261; al-Dhahabī, Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ, vol. 1, pp. 356–357; Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Al-Tamḥīd, vol. 7, p. 150.

(2) In the original (al-Asl) it reads “yadkhul” (enters). This is an error. The readings in S, Ṭ, and in al-Tamḥīd confirm the correct text. The isnād of the hadith “Indeed, Allah uncovers His shin” was given above, and the editor of al-Tamḥīd, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣiddīq (in the same source), commented on the phrase “and His hand will enter the Fire until whoever He wills emerges” by stating: “This is not found in any marfūʿ hadith accepted as conclusive.”

(3) Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr records in Al-Tamḥīd (7/150) that Mālik disliked this formulation for fear of engaging in anthropomorphism (tashbīh) through questioning “how” (kayf).

(4) As its wording and isnād were presented above. I say: The hadith “Allah created Adam in His image, or in the image of ar-Raḥmān (the Merciful)” has been extensively discussed by the imams. Some have allegorized its apparent meaning—as with similar reports mentioning “image”—denying that God possesses an image in a way befitting Him (taʾwīl). Among them are Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Ḥajar, and others. Others have affirmed the wording of this hadith and its parallels, upholding them in a manner befitting His majesty and greatness without asking how (bilā kayf), without anthropomorphism, likening, or representation; among them is Imam Aḥmad (may Allah have mercy on him).
