— as a mursal report (1), whose wording runs: “khalaqa Ādama ʿalā ṣūrat ar-Raḥmān” (He created Adam in the image of the Most Merciful). Al-Aʿmash, however, transmitted it with a fully connected chain as a musnad report (2). If the leading Imams were willing to relate this hadith and others of its kind in mursal form, how can anyone allege that they refrained from transmitting them? The narration is found in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections (3) through the chain of Maʿmar from Hammām from Abū Hurayrah, and it is likewise recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (4)
Al-Kūfī was among the trustworthy Tābi‘īn. He transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, Anas b. Mālik, and others, and died in 119 AH. Ibn Ḥibbān, in his al-Thiqāt (as quoted by Ibn Ḥajar), remarks that he practiced tadlīs (omission in transmission). See: al-Dhahabī, Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl, 1/451; Ibn Ḥajar, Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 2/178–180.
(1) Ibn Khuzaymah transmits it in al-Tawḥīd (p. 38), noting that al-Thawrī narrated this report mursal (unlinked) rather than musnad. Its wording is: “It is not disgraceful to have a plain face, for the son of Adam was created in the image of the Most Merciful.”
(2) It is also reported from Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit via ‘Aṭā’ from Ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “Do not disgrace faces, for the son of Adam was created in the image of the Most Merciful.” Its isnād is weak. It appears in Ibn Abī ‘Āṣim, al-Sunnah (nos. 228–229), as “Do not disgrace the faces…,” and in Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Tawḥīd (p. 38), who identifies three defects (‘ilal) in the report:
• Al-Thawrī differed from al-‘Amash in his chain and thus left it mursal, not attributing it to Ibn ʿUmar.
• Al-‘Amash practiced tadlīs, not stating that he heard it from Ḥabīb.
• Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit likewise practiced tadlīs, so it is not established that he heard it from ‘Aṭā’.
Also see al-Ājrī, al-Sharī‘ah (p. 315) and al-Bayhaqī, al-Asmā’ wa-l-Ṣifāt (p. 291), where it appears as: “...for Allāh created Adam in the image of the Most Merciful.”
