Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

Indeed, in his major work (1)—from which he later produced the abridged Musnad—he also transmitted a report that is among the most eloquent hadiths concerning the Divine Attributes, though he recorded it with a weak chain (2). He said:

[He informed us] (3) Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad, who said: “Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah narrated to me; Abū al-Azhar Muʿāwiyah ibn Isḥāq ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to me, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn—” (4)

Jaʿfar al-Ṭaḥāwī from his maternal uncle Ismāʿīl ibn Yaḥyā al-Muzanī, a disciple of al-Shāfiʿī (p. 405); and al-Risāla (Imām al-Shāfiʿī), p. 75. (1) That is, al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah have mercy on him—in his Kitāb al-Umm, vol. 1, pp. 208–209. See also his Musnad al-Shāfiʿī, vol. 1, pp. 126–127; compare the two. (2) This passage involves Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Aslamī al-Madanī, whose reliability is widely disputed. Al-Dhahabī records in Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (vol. 1, pp. 57–58) that Mālik was asked whether he was trustworthy in ḥadīth and replied, “No, nor in his religion.” Imām Aḥmad reportedly said, “Abandon his narrations; he is a Muʿtazilī Qadarī who reports ahādīth without basis.” Al-Bukhārī described him as a Qadarī and a Jahmī. Al-Nasāʾī, al-Daraqutnī and others labeled him abandoned. Al-ʿAjlī in Thiqāt (pp. 55–56) calls him “Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā al-Aslamī al-Madanī, a Rāfiḍī Jahmī; his ḥadīth is not to be recorded, yet al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him.” Ibn Ḥibbān explains in al-Majrūḥīn (vol. 1, p. 107) that al-Shāfiʿī sat with him in his youth and memorized his narrations “as an engraving on stone.” Later, upon arriving in Egypt without his library, he relied on what he had memorized, which explains why he narrated from him—often without naming him explicitly. Al-Dhahabī adds (Mīzān, vol. 1, p. 58) that al-Rabīʿ reported: “I heard al-Shāfiʿī say: ‘He was a Qadarī,’ said Yāḥyā ibn Zakariyyā ibn Ḥaywa. ‘I asked al-Rabīʿ: what led al-Shāfiʿī to narrate from him? He said: “He would rather fall from the sky—or thereafter—than lie,” and he was reliable in ḥadīth.’” (3) The text enclosed in square brackets is an interpolation found in the S, T, Kitāb al-Umm and the Musnad editions. (4) In Kitāb al-Umm it reads: “He said: It was related to me.”
