yet it does not go beyond their throats; they dart out of Islam as an arrow darts out of its prey." (1)
Among the innovators who face the qiblah—many of the Rafidites, the Qadarites, the Jahmites, and others—there is to be found a degree of strenuous ijtihad in knowledge and practice that is not observed among the people of the Sunnah; the same can be said of many from the People of the Book and the idolaters. What is sought, however, is the sound quality (2) of that effort. Al-Fudayl ibn ʿIyad (3), commenting on the Almighty’s words, “that He may test you to see which of you is best in deed” (4), said (5): “It is the deed that is purest in intention and most correct in method.” It was asked

It begins with the report of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he swore an oath when Dhū al-Khuwaysirah, a man from Banū Tamīm, came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, be just!’ He replied, ‘Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not just? You will certainly fail and suffer loss if I am not just.’ ʿUmar then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, allow me to strike off his head.’ He said, ‘Leave him, for he has people whom you would despise…’”

(١) الحديث بهذا اللفظ أخرجه البخاري في صحيحه ولم يرد فيه قوله: "وقراءته مع قراءتهم"، وأوله: عن أبي سعيد الخدري - رضي الله عنه - قال: بينما نحن جلوس عند رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم -، وهو يقسم قسمًا إذ أتاه ذو الخويصرة وهو رجل من بني تميم، فقال: يا رسول الله اعدل، فقال: "ويلك ومن يعدل إذا لم أعدل؟ قد خبت وخسرت إن لم أكن أعدل". فقال عمر: يا رسول الله ائذن لي فيه فأضرب عنقه، فقال: "دعه فإن له أصحابًا يحقر أحدكم. . ".
