he dies while performing one of the deeds of the people of the Fire.” (1)
This ḥadith was transmitted only by the compilers of the Sunan and the Musnads—such as Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī—and al-Tirmidhī said: (2) “It is a ḥasan (sound) report.”
Some have maintained that its isnād is munqaṭiʿ (broken) and that one of its transmitters is majhūl (unknown) (3). Nevertheless, Mālik cited it in the al-Muwaṭṭaʾ (4), and his version is even more explicit than the others, for it says:
“Then He passed His right hand over his back and brought forth offspring from him; then He passed His hand over his back again and brought forth further offspring.”

(2) i.e., al-Tirmidhī.
(3) Al-Tirmidhī comments: “This is a ḥasan (good) ḥadīth; Muslim ibn Yasar did not hear it from ʿUmar. Some report that an unknown man stands between Muslim ibn Yasar and ʿUmar in this isnād.” That man is Nuʿaym ibn Rabīʿah, mentioned by Abū Dāwūd in the above source. Ibn Kathīr observes in his Tafsīr (vol. 2, p. 263): “It appears that Imam Mālik deliberately omitted Nuʿaym ibn Rabīʿah because he was unaware of his status and did not recognize him; he is known only through this ḥadīth, and so Mālik leaves out those he does not approve, explaining why he classifies many marfūʿ narrations as mursal and many maʾqūl narrations as munqaṭiʿ.” Ahmad Muḥammad Shākir—commenting on the Musnad (vol. 1, p. 290)—notes that Ibn Ḥibbān includes Nuʿaym ibn Rabīʿah among his thiqāt and that al-Bukhārī lists him in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr without criticism.
Note: al-munqaṭiʿ (disconnected) denotes any ḥadīth whose isnād is broken; al-maqṭūʿ (severed) refers to a report attributed to a Tābiʿī, whether a statement or action. The maqṭūʿ is not the same as the munqaṭiʿ, since the latter describes the isnād and the former describes the matn.
