and likewise his words: “The Compeller will say, ‘The intercession that remains is Mine alone.’ He will scoop up a handful from the Fire and bring out (2) a people who have been utterly charred,”(3).
Mālik (4) also narrated—through Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)—that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“When Allah finished creating the creatures, He wrote with Him, above His Throne, ‘My mercy has outstripped My wrath.’”(5) The compilers of the authentic collections, such as al-Bukhārī, recorded this report through his chain and through other chains as well.
Al-Bukhārī further relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from (6) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):

(4) In his Tajrid al-Tamhid (p. 92), Ibn Abd al-Barr reports that Malik narrates fifty-four hadiths from Abu al-Zinad in the Muwatta’, all musnad (with chains). I consulted this enumeration but did not find this hadith mentioned by the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him). Al-Bukhari, however, transmits it via Malik from Abu al-Zinad, as will be shown in the hadith’s authentication.
(5) This hadith in this wording is recorded by al-Bukhari in his Sahih (vol. 8, pp. 187–188), in the Book of Tawhid, chapter “And Our Word has already gone forth to Our Messengers,” via Malik from Abu al-Zinad from al-A‘raj from Abu Hurayra. He also transmits it by this and another route with variant formulations: al-Bukhari (Sahih, vol. 8, p. 171, Book of Tawhid, chapter “And Allah warns you with Himself”; p. 176, chapter “And His Throne was over the water”); Muslim (Sahih, vol. 4, pp. 2107–2108, Book of Repentance, chapter on the vastness of God’s mercy preceding His wrath, hadiths 14–16); Ibn Majah (Sunan, vol. 2, p. 1435, Book of Asceticism, chapter “What to hope for from God’s mercy on the Day of Resurrection,” hadith 4295); Imam Ahmad (Musnad, vol. 2, p. 466); and others.
