al-Aʿraj (1) relates from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace— (2) said:
“Allah laughs at two men: one of them kills the other, yet both of them enter Paradise. The first fights in the path of Allah and is killed; then Allah accepts the killer’s repentance, so he fights in the path of Allah and is martyred.”
The compilers of the sound collections have recorded this ḥadīth through Mālik’s chain and through other narrators besides Mālik (3), and it was also transmitted
= From Abu Huraira. See Tarikh al-Thiqat by al-Ajli, p. 254; Mizan al-I’tidal by al-Dhahabi, 2:418–420; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib by Ibn Hajar, 5:203–205.
(1) He is Abu Sufyan Humayd ibn Qays al-A‘raj al-Makki, one of the three from whom the people of Mecca learned qirā’a (recitation). Ahmad and others declared him reliable. His narrations were transmitted by the two Sufyans, Malik, Abu Hanifa, and others. He died in 130 AH. See Jarh wa al-Tadil by Ibn Abi Hatim, 1/2:227–228; Mizan al-I’tidal by al-Dhahabi, 1:615; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib by Ibn Hajar, 2:46–47.
(2) Text enclosed in parentheses is omitted in manuscript S.
(3) Al-Bukhari narrated it from Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Huraira, in this wording, without the phrases “kulluhumā” (both of them) and “fa-yaqātilu fī sabīl Allāh” (and he fights in the cause of Allah). See Sahih al-Bukhari 3:210, Kitāb al-Jihād, chapter “The disbeliever kills the believer, then becomes Muslim, atones, and kills [another].”
Muslim narrated it from Sufyan, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Huraira, in this wording but with the addition “fa-qālū: Kayfa yā Rasūl Allāh?” (“How, O Messenger of Allah?”) after “kulluhumā yadkhulān al-Jannah” (both of them will enter Paradise), and “fa-yaslamu” (and he becomes Muslim) after “yatawabba Allāh ‘alā al-qātil” (Allah accepts the repentance of the killer). He also transmitted a variant from ‘Abd al-Razzāq, from Mu‘ammar, from Hunnām ibn Munabbih: “This is what Abu Huraira narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).” See Sahih Muslim 3:1504–1505, Kitāb al-Jihād, chapter “Clarifying that when two men kill each other, both will enter Paradise,” hadiths 128 and 129.
An-Nasā’ī recorded it in his Sunan 6:32, Kitāb al-Jihād, chapter “The gathering of the killer and the killed in the cause of Allah in Paradise,” from Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Huraira; he also transmitted another wording from Sufyan, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Huraira.
Ibn Mājah recorded it in his Sunan 1:68 (al-Muqaddima), chapter “Concerning what was rejected by the Jahmiyya.”
