al-Tirmidhi, who graded it authentic (1), and by others; and likewise the verse affirming that He created Adam with His two hands (2), and the like.
“A rabbi among the rabbis came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Muḥammad, we find that Allah places the heavens on one finger, the two earths on another, the trees on another, the water and dust on another, and all other creatures on another, and then says, ‘I am the Sovereign.’” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until his canines showed, confirming the scholar’s depiction. He then recited: {And they have not appraised Allah with true appraisal} [Quran 39:67].

(1) At-Tirmidhī narrates from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who reported from Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt, from Abū Kudaīnah, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn as-Sāʾib, from Abū al-Ḍuḥā, from Ibn ʿAbbās that a Jew passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereupon the Prophet said, “O Jew, inform us.” He replied, “What do you say, O Abū al-Qāsim, when Allah places the heavens on His little finger, the earth on His little finger, the water on His little finger, the mountains on His little finger, and all creation on His little finger?” Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣalt gestured first with his pinky, then moved along until he reached his thumb. Allah then revealed: {And they have not appraised Allah with true appraisal} [Quran 39:67].
At-Tirmidhī commented: “This ḥadīth is hasan, gharīb, and ṣaḥīḥ; we know no other version from Ibn ʿAbbās except this one.”

(2) In some copies the phrase reads bi-yadayhi (by His two Hands). This is supported by the verse: {He said, “O Iblīs, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created by My two Hands?”} [Quran 38:75]. Numerous authentic ḥadīth reports from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) align with the obvious meaning of this verse and further explain it. Space does not permit listing them all here; the following are representative:

• Sahīh Muslim 4:2043 – Book of Qadar, chapter on the debate between Adam and Moses (peace be upon them), Ḥadīth 15.
• Sunan at-Tirmidhī 4:444 – Book of Qadar, chapter on the debate between Adam and Moses (peace be upon them), Ḥadīth 2134.
