and hatred until the Day of Resurrection}.(1) The exegetes have stated(2) that this verse foretells their splitting into these three sects and others besides.(3)

Moreover,(4) immediately after His words {the third of three}, the Exalted informs us of what shows that such people have taken Him as a son, saying:(5) {Do not say, “Three.” Desist—it will be better for you. Allah is but one God; exalted is He above having a son.}(6)

He has likewise(7) mentioned what proves that their claim that Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary, amounts to shirk, for He, the Most High, says: {They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is—"

(1) Surah al-Mā’idah, verse 14. (2) The text within angle brackets is an addition in manuscripts S and T. (3) In his Tafsīr (vol. VI, p. 159), Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī, after presenting two interpretations of “He cast enmity and hatred among them,” favors Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī’s view that it refers to enmity arising from the Christians’ own ahwāʾ (desires), since their mutual hostility stems from differing beliefs about the Messiah rather than divine revelation. Al-Qurṭubī (Tafsīr, vol. VI, p. 118), quoting al-Rubayʿ ibn Anas, understands this as a specific reference to the schisms among Christians—into Jacobites, Nestorians, and Melkites—each declaring the others unbelievers. Ibn Kathīr (Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm, vol. II, p. 33) similarly explains that God has cast enmity and hatred among them, which persists until the Hour; thus the various Christian sects remain in mutual antagonism, each anathematizing the others and barring them from their places of worship. (4) In MS S: “Allah, exalted be He.” (5) In the original MS S reads faqawluhu (“so his statement”), whereas the reading adopted from MS T—more fitting to the context—is here retained. (6) Surah an-Nisā’, verse 171. The word “khayr” appears in the original; it is a scribal lapse. (7) The particle “qad” is omitted in MSS S and T.
