“…so if anyone disputes with you about him after the knowledge that has come to you….” ⦗1⦘
Imam Ahmad ⦗2⦘ and others have cited this verse, and others like it, ⦗3⦘ to demonstrate that the Qur’an is part of Allah’s knowledge, treating it as one portion of that knowledge. Who, then, would claim that Allah’s knowledge admits of no parts or divisions?
Know that in this issue they have no real support except the argument relied upon by the leader of their school, the judge Abū Bakr al-Bāqillānī. He founded his case on a consensus (ijmāʿ) that he himself asserted ⦗4⦘—and elsewhere ⦗5⦘ he lays claim to consensuses that have no basis in fact—such as his claim of a consensus
(1) Surah Al ‘Imran, verse 61.
(2) In his Kitab al-Sunnah (p. 4), ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal states: “I heard my father say: whoever declares the Qur’an to be created is in our view a disbeliever, since the Qur’an is part of the knowledge of Allah. Allah, exalted be He, says: {fa-man ḥājak fīhi min ba‘di mā jā’aka mina al-‘ilm} (‘So if anyone disputes with you about it after knowledge has come to you…’).” See Masa’il al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (Ishaq ibn Ibrahim), vol. 2, pp. 153–154.
(3) As Allah says: {wa-lan tarḍā ‘anka al-Yahūd wa-lā al-Nasārā ḥattā tattabi‘a millatahum. Qul inna hudā Allāh huwa al-hudā wa-la’in ittaba‘ta ahwā’ahum ba‘da al-ladhī jā’aka mina al-‘ilm; mā laka min Allāhi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīr} (al-Baqarah 2:120), and: {wa-la’in atayta alladhīna ūtū al-kitāba bi-kulli āyah; mā tabi‘ū qiblataka wa-mā anta bi-tābi‘in qiblatahum… wa-la’in ittaba‘ta ahwā’ahum min ba‘dī mā jā’aka mina al-‘ilm… innaka idhān lamina al-ẓālimīn} (al-Baqarah 2:145). Ishaq ibn Ibrahim reports: “I heard Abu ‘Abd Allah say: ‘There are four instances in the Qur’an—verses 120 and 145 of al-Baqarah, verse 61 of Al ‘Imran, and verse 37 of Ar-Ra’d—featuring the phrase “min ba‘di mā jā’aka mina al-‘ilm”. Whoever claims that the Qur’an is created is a disbeliever.’” See Masa’il al-Imam Ahmad (Ishaq ibn Ibrahim), vol. 2, p. 154.
(4) A few lines later, the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) will mention this consensus as transmitted from Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Razi at the end of al-‘Uqul.
