better (1) than the earth filled (2) with the like of the other, because their hearts are different, whereas the disparity in their outward forms does not come anywhere near that. And likewise, the speech of Allah that He sent down to Moses—the tawrah (Torah)—[and that which He sent down to Jesus, the injil (Gospel), and that which He sent down to David, the zabur (Psalms)] (3) and that which He sent down to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the Quran: the dissimilarity among them was not (4) merely a matter of differing tongues (5) such that, were each to be rendered into the language of the other, it would become its equal or the very same text, as these atheists contend with regard to the Names of Allah and His verses. Rather, even after translation, each of them (6) possesses meanings (7) that are neither the meanings (8) of the others nor even their equal. In fact, the gap between the meanings of these books is greater than the gap between their wordings. The Hebrew tongue is close to Arabic, yet the meanings of the Quran stand far above those of the tawrah by a tremendous measure. The Messiah’s language was Hebrew, and only after him was the injil translated into Syriac. So do you imagine that the injil which Allah revealed to him in Hebrew (9) is the very tawrah that (10) was revealed to Moses?! Rather, two great fundamentals must be understood: the first is that the Quran is uniquely characterized by this very Arabic wording and composition.

= Then I looked, and lo, a man endowed with akhlaq (moral character). I said, “This one.” He replied. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “For this one, in the sight of Allah, is better on the Day of Resurrection than filling the earth with the likes of him.” (1) In the original manuscript S reads “khayr”; the reading confirmed by manuscript T. (2) In the original, S reads “mala”; the reading confirmed by T. (3) The text between the parentheses is omitted in both S and T. (4) In T: takun. (5) In S: kamujarrad; in T: bimujarrad. (6) In S: minha. (7) In both S and T: hiya maʿānī. (8) In all copies: maʿānī. I have retained what I consider correct. (9) In S: al-ʿibrīyah. (10) In both S and T: alladhī.
