to Muhammad? Rather, these are the divine ḥadiths that the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him(1)—relates from his Lord, such as his statement: “Allah, Exalted is He, says: ‘Whoever shows enmity to a walī of Mine has declared war upon Me,’” (2) and his statement: “I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him whenever he calls upon Me,” (3) and others of this nature.

(1) The text enclosed in parentheses is an addition found in manuscripts S and T. (2) This is one of the ḥadīth qudsī in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) conveys the words of Allah. It is narrated by al-Bukhārī with a variant wording from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Allah said: ‘Whoever shows enmity toward a walī (devoted friend) of Mine has in fact declared war against Me. My servant does not draw near to Me by anything more beloved to Me than that which I have made obligatory upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me with the voluntary (nawāfil) acts until I love him, and when I love him I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks….’” (Sahīh al-Bukhārī, vol. 7, p. 190, Book of Softening the Hearts, chapter on humility.) It is also transmitted from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in similar wording. See Musnad Aḥmad (vol. 6, p. 256). (3) This is another ḥadīth qudsī. It appears in these words in Musnad al-Imām Aḥmad (vol. 3, pp. 210, 277) from Anas ibn Mālik, and in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (vol. 4, p. 2067) in the Book of Remembrance, Supplication, Repentance, and Seeking Forgiveness—chapter on the virtue of remembrance, supplication, and drawing near to Allah (hadith no. 2675). The Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Allah says: ‘I am as My servant expects Me to be….’” In al-Bukhārī the wording is: “Allah the Exalted says: ‘I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself; if he remembers Me in a gathering, I mention him in a gathering better than theirs….’” (Sahīh al-Bukhārī, vol. 8, p. 171, Book of Monotheism, chapter on Allah’s saying “and Allah warns you concerning Himself.”) It is also found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (vol. 4, p. 2068) in the same book and chapter, and in Sunan al-Tirmidhī (vol. 5, p. 581), Book of Supplications—chapter on having good expectations of Allah (Exalted and Majestic), hadith no. 3603.

". صحيح البخاري ٧/ ١٩٠ - كتاب الرقاق- باب التواضع. ويروى عن عائشة رضي الله عنها بلفظ قريب من هذا. انظر: المسند -للإمام أحمد- ٦/ ٢٥٦.
