(1) Likewise, his statement in the ḥadīth of Asmāʾ bint Yazīd (2): “Allah’s Greatest Name is contained in these two verses.” (3)
The sixty-second point:
Although the Most Beautiful Names of Allah indicate His Essence, which is described by numerous attributes, the manner in which the scriptures sent down from heaven point to His Speech is not the same as the way His Names point to His sanctified Self. Two names may share the same referent, yet each of them is distinguished by the particular attribute that it alone denotes. By contrast, every revealed discourse possesses its own meaning that is exclusive to it (4); the other discourse shares nothing of that meaning, as
= This hadith is presented in this exact wording.
It is recorded in Majma‘ al-Zawa’id by al-Haythami (10:156) from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is there any supplication that is never rejected?” He replied, “Yes: you say, ‘I ask You by Your Most Exalted, Most Honored, Most Majestic, Most Generous Name.’”
Al-Haythami comments: “It was narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat and al-Kabir, and it includes narrators whom I do not recognize.”

(3) It was also transmitted by al-Tirmidhi in his Sunan (5:517), Kitab al-Da‘awat, Bab 65, Hadith 3478, on the authority of Asma’ bint Yazid, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The Greatest Name of Allah is contained in these two verses: ‘wa ilahukum ilahun wahidun la ilaha illa huwa ar-Rahman ar-Rahim’ (and your deity is One Deity; there is no deity except Him, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate) and at the beginning of Ali ‘Imran: ‘Alif Lam Mim. Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer.’” He declared this hadith to be hasan sahih.
