Likewise, his statement in the hadith of Anas ibn Malik (1): “He has invoked Allah by His Name which, when He is called upon by it, He responds, and when He is asked by it, He bestows.” (2)
And his words: [] (3) “I ask You by Your Name—the Great, the Greatest, the Majestic, the Most Majestic.” (4)
= The narrators of Ahmad and Abu Ya‘lâ are the same as those in al-Ṣaḥīḥ, except for Abū Salama al-Juhānī, whom Ibn Ḥibbān has declared reliable. Ahmad Shākir said: “Its isnād is sound.” See: al-Musnad of Imam Aḥmad, ed. Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir, vol. 5:266–267, ʾḥdīth no. 3712; vol. 6:153, no. 4318.
(1) In the original manuscript there is a blank space, marked “S,” corresponding to about three words, whereas in edition “T” the text is continuous. The reading preserved in “T” is probably correct.
(2) This hadith in the given wording appears in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, vol. 2:167–168, Book of Prayer, chapter on Supplication, no. 1495; and in Sunan al-Nāsā’ī, vol. 3:44, Book of Forgetfulness, chapter “Supplication after the Dhikr,” which includes “…by His Greatest Name….”
The hadith begins: “On the authority of Anas: He was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while a man was praying. Then he supplicated: ‘O Allah, I ask You for praise; there is no deity except You, the Bestower, Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘He has indeed supplicated….’ ”
Variant wordings are also found in:
• Sunan Abī Dāwūd (see above for volume, page, book, chapter; hadiths no. 1493, 1494).
• Sunan al-Tirmidhī, vol. 5:515–516, Book of Supplications, chapter “Comprehensive Supplications from the Prophet (peace be upon him),” no. 3475 (graded ḥasan gharīb, p. 55; see also chapter “Allah’s creation of a hundred mercies,” no. 3544).
• Sunan Ibn Mājah, vol. 2:1267–1268, Book of Supplication, chapter “The Greatest Name of Allah,” hadiths nos. 3856–3858.
(3) Between the brackets there is originally a blank space, marked “S” for about three words, while in edition “T” the text is continuous. This reading appears correct and does not affect the meaning.
(4) In the original manuscript it reads illa kabīr (“except great”), which is a scribal error. The variant confirmed by “S” and “T” differs, and I have not encountered any other reading.
