Sixty-first Argument (1):
The Qur’an repeatedly affirms that Allah possesses multiple “words.” He says,
“And the word of your Lord has been perfected in truth and justice; none can alter His words.” (2)
He also says,
“If all the trees on earth were pens and the sea, followed by seven more seas, were ink, the words of Allah would not be exhausted.” (3)
He says further,
“Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would run dry before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought another like it as a supplement.” (4)
And He says,
“So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Allah and His words.” (5)
The Exalted also says,
“Allah intends to establish the truth by His words and to cut off the very root of the disbelievers,” (6)
and,
“Allah effaces falsehood and establishes the truth by His words; surely He knows well whatever lies within the breasts.” (7)
And He says,
“and she confirmed the words of her Lord and His scriptures.” (8)
Likewise, mass-transmitted reports from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—mention seeking refuge in the perfect words of Allah (9). Such passages, and others like them, plainly demonstrate the plurality of His words. How, then, can it be asserted that His speech is nothing but a single meaning with no plurality whatsoever? They have advanced this claim and offered a reply to it.
