—could they remove His harm? Or if He wills mercy for me, could they withhold His mercy? Say: “Allah suffices me; upon Him alone rely those who put their trust.” (1)
And He also says:
“Say, ‘Is it other than Allah that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones? (64) It has already been revealed to you and to those before you that if you should ever associate anything with Him, your deeds will surely be nullified and you will certainly be among the losers. (65) Rather, worship Allah alone and be among the grateful.’” (2)
The Exalted likewise says:
“When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter recoil, but when those besides Him are mentioned, they rejoice.” (3)
And He says:
“When you mention your Lord alone in the Quran, they turn away on their heels in aversion.” (4)
He, Most High, also says:
“They are astonished that a warner from among them has come to them, and the disbelievers say, ‘This is a magician, a liar. (4) Has he made the gods into one God? This is indeed something astounding! (5)’ The leaders among them went forth, saying, ‘Go on and hold fast to your gods; this matter is surely intended. (6) We have never heard of this in the latter creed; this is nothing but an invention.’” (5)
And He says:
“Whenever it was said to them, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ they waxed arrogant (35) and declared, ‘Shall we really abandon our gods for a mad poet?’” (6)
And He says:
“Most of them do not believe in Allah except while still committing shirk.” (7)
Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAṭāʾ, ʿIkrimah, and Mujāhid said: He asks them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” and they reply, “Allah,” yet despite this (8) they worship others besides Him.
