Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

Al-Nasir (1), the lord of al-Karak (2), used to come to him and study under him, to the extent that it was said he himself became shaken in his faith because of him and others like him. He said: “I entered upon him in Damascus, and he asked me, ‘So-and-so, what do you believe?’ I replied, ‘I believe what the Muslims believe.’ He said, ‘And are you absolutely certain of that (3), and is your heart at ease with it?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ At that he wept long and bitterly (4)—as I recall—and said, ‘But by Allah, I do not know what I believe! By Allah, I do not know what I believe! By Allah, I do not know what I believe!’ (5)

(1) He is Dāwūd, son of al-Malik al-Mu‘aẓẓam ‘Īsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb—al-Malik al-Nāṣir Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn—who succeeded his father as ruler of Damascus in 626 AH. His uncle al-Ashraf deposed him, whereupon he withdrew to al-Karak and ruled it for eleven years. In 647 AH he appointed his son ‘Īsā as governor, but that same year al-Ṣāliḥ Ayyūb ibn ‘Īsā wrested it from him. Al-Nāṣir then died an exile. He was distinguished by his virtue, eloquence, literary acumen, and keen interest in collecting works on the soul. He died in 656 AH.
