al-Maʿmari narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Bakkār al-ʿAbsi related to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Raqāshī informed us—I heard Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd say:
“The tribulation the Muʿtazilites have inflicted upon this ummah is more severe than the tribulation of the Azāriqah, because they claim that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—went astray, that it is impermissible to accept their testimony regarding what they transmitted (1), and they deny the shafāʿa (intercession) (2) and the ḥawḍ (the Prophet’s Pond) (3),
(1) In al-Hilya: concerning the innovations (bidʿah) they introduced.
(2) The salaf—may God have mercy on them—affirmed intercession (al-shafāʿa) on the Day of Resurrection, based on the mutawātir evidences supporting it. They are of various kinds, which Ibn Kathīr (may God have mercy on him) enumerates with their proofs in al-Nihāya, vol. 2, pp. 268–342. Scholars have exhaustively collected the proofs for intercession along its chains of transmission. See, for example:
- at-Tawḥīd by Ibn Khuzayma, pp. 241, 327.
- al-Sunnah by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, vol. 2, pp. 364–400.
- al-Sharīʿa by al-Ājurī, pp. 321–352.
The Muʿtazilites rejected certain types of intercession and denied them, as recorded in their works. See, for instance, Sharḥ al-Uṣūl by Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār, pp. 687–693.
(3) Just as the salaf affirmed intercession, they also affirmed the Pool (al-Ḥawd) that God granted to His Prophet—peace be upon him—on the plains of Resurrection. Sadr al-Dīn al-Ḥafnī states in Sharḥ al-Ṭaḥāwiyya, p. 251, after citing several mutawātir reports on the Pool:
"What emerges from the hadiths on the description of the Pool is that it is a vast basin, a noble watering place, supplied from the River Kawthar, whose water is whiter than milk, colder than ice, sweeter than honey, and more fragrant than musk. Its width and length are equal and immense; each corner is a month’s journey. Some hadiths relate that each time one drinks from it, its extent increases; within it grow musk, al-Ridrād, pearls, rods of gold, and it yields gems of various colors. Glory to the Creator for whom nothing is impossible."
He adds: "Hadiths report that every prophet has a pool, and the Pool of our Prophet Muḥammad—peace be upon him—is the greatest, sweetest, and most frequented."
To consult the hadiths on the Pool and its description that refute the innovators who deny its existence, see:
