is not like ascribing creation to Him, and that, in the language of the prophets and the believers, the category of “He said” is altogether different from the category of “He created.” The detailed refutation of the Muʿtazilite claim has its own place, yet once that claim is shown to be invalid—and their position likewise false (1)—the correctness of the Salaf’s doctrine necessarily follows, and this (2) only strengthens it.
Twenty-ninth Point
Both the Salaf and the Muʿtazilah agreed that the Speech of Allah is not merely the abstract meaning you affirm. Rather, regarding what the Muʿtazilah themselves called the Speech of Allah and declared to be created, the Salaf concurred that it is indeed the Speech of Allah, but held that it is uncreated. You, however, assert that it is not the Speech of Allah at all. Your view therefore tears through the consensus of the Salaf and the Muʿtazilah alike, thereby breaching the consensus (3) of the entire Muslim community, for (4) in the age of the Salaf there were only those two opinions, and in that era no one claimed that the Quran which the Muʿtazilah deemed created is not the Speech of Allah (5).
