Among ⦗1⦘ the earlier members of our own circle was Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Qalānisi ⦗2⦘. Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mujāhid ⦗3⦘ also inclined toward this doctrine, and it was the view of Mālik ibn Anas ⦗4⦘ and the great majority of the leading scholars of the Salaf. They would say: “Īmān is knowledge in the heart, affirmation with the tongue, and action with the limbs.”
I say: To relate their statements to the very end is not appropriate here ⦗5⦘, for our aim is not to catalogue the opinions of the Salaf and the Imams, nor to reproduce the concessions of those who dared to voice them.
The preacher and one of the imams. Al-Hakim describes him as “the imam worthy of emulation in fiqh, kalam, preaching, piety, intellect, and religion.” He died in 328 AH. (2) He is Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Khālid al-Qalānisī al-Rāzī, a contemporary of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī; his doctrine on affirmation corresponds to al-Ashʿarī’s. I found no biographical entry for him in the available ʾrijāl works. See Ibn ʿAsākir, Tabyīn Kaḍb al-Muftari, p. 398. For his views on faith, see al-Juwaynī, al-Irshād, p. 399.
(3) He is Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Mujāhid al-Ṭāʾī, the theologian attached to Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī. Originally from Basra, he settled in Baghdad, where Qāḍī Abū Bakr al-Bāqillānī studied kalam under him. Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī notes that he authored fine works in uṣūl. See al-Baghdādī, Tārīkh Baghdād, vol. 1, p. 343; al-Dhahabī, Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ, vol. 16, p. 305; al-Subkī, Tabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyya, vol. 3, p. 368.
