Likewise, whenever we declare an opponent an unbeliever on the basis of interpretation, we do so only because that interpretation indicates that the essential reality of faith is missing from his heart; it is impossible for revelation to pronounce a person an unbeliever while faith and inward affirmation are still present in his heart (1).
He said (2): “Some of our scholars hold to the doctrine of muwāfāh (3)—that genuine faith requires a person to meet his Lord in that state and to have it sealed upon him. Others do not consider this a present-time condition. And is verbal acknowledgement (iqrār) itself a prerequisite of faith? They differed on this point after (4) not…"
(1) In the original edition the text reads “yaghud,” which makes no sense. The reading adopted here is confirmed by manuscripts S and T.

(3) Among the Ashʿaris the concept of al-mawafa (attainment at death) is explained by Saʿd al-Din al-Taftazani as follows: “Al-mawafa means coming to and reaching the end of life, the first stage of the hereafter. It is clear that saving faith (al-iman al-munji) and destructive disbelief (al-kufr al-muhlik) are judged at that moment, even if preceded by the opposite state, and not by a state first established and then changed. Therefore many Ashʿaris hold that the criterion is the faith and bliss of al-mawafa—meaning that this ultimately saves—without implying that one’s faith during life was not true faith or that its prior disbelief was not real disbelief. The same applies to bliss and misery, friendship and enmity.”
See Sharh al-Maqasid by Saʿd al-Din al-Taftazani, vol. 2, pp. 263–264.
The majority of Ashʿaris consider it impermissible to allow any exception regarding one’s faith in the past or present, since that would imply doubt in faith. However, with respect to the future—that is, in terms of al-mawafa—they permit such an exception, arguing that a person does not know with what state of faith he will meet God at death, thus leaving room for hope of a good outcome.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya (in his book al-Iman, pp. 120–121) clarifies that the view defining faith as what the servant brings to his Lord at death is an innovator’s opinion, held by none of the salaf, and has no basis in the sharʿ; these theologians wrongly attributed this rationale to the salaf because they were unfamiliar with their actual statements and instead endorsed what appeared in the writings of Jahmī and other theological innovators.
(4) In the original edition it reads “bal.” I have adopted the reading found in manuscripts S and T, which I found more appropriate.
