He(2) said: What is acceptable with us(3) is that the reality of faith is to affirm Allah; thus the believer in Allah is the one who affirms Him. Genuine affirmation(4) is the inner discourse of the soul, and such inner discourse is established only in conjunction with knowledge, for we have shown that the soul’s speech is determined by one’s conviction. The proof that faith is affirmation lies in the plain wording of the language and in the very roots(5) of Arabic,(6) and this is not something that can plausibly be denied so as to demand further evidence. (1) In al-Irshad it reads walam yattafiq (they did not agree). (2) The speaker is al-Juwayni in al-Irshad, and the statement is connected to what precedes. (3) This is the Ashari position on the reality of iman (faith), namely that it consists solely of assent. See also their view in the following works: al-Luma by Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari, p. 123; Usul al-Din by Abd al-Qahir al-Baghdadi, p. 248; al-Tamhid by al-Baqillani, pp. 346–347; and al-Mawaqif by al-Aiji, pp. 384–388. (4) In al-Irshad it reads al-tahqiq (verification). (5) In the original it reads wa-ahl. The most appropriate reading is that supported by S, T, and al-Irshad. (6) In al-Irshad it reads wa-hadha (and this). (7) In al-Irshad it reads wa-fi (and in). (8) Quran, Sura Yusuf, verse 17. (9) In al-Irshad it reads wa-ma anta (and you are not). (10) In S it reads al-fadl; this is a scribal error.
