of the later Muʿtazilites, and just as Ibn Sīnā’s al-Ishārāt (1) is the “Psalter” of the later philosophers. Thus they have fragmented their affair among themselves into separate scriptures—each faction rejoicing in what it possesses—although the circle of Abū al-Maʿālī is sounder and closer to Islam.

Section: On Names and Legal Rulings
Know that the aim of this section obliges us to discuss (2) the reality of īmān (faith), a subject over which the various Muslim schools have sharply differed.
= There is no information on these two works apart from what is recorded in heritage bibliographies such as Kashf al-Zunun by Haji Khalifa (vol. 1, p. 413; vol. 2, p. 1200), Hadiyat al-Arifin by al-Baghdadi (vol. 2, p. 69), al-A‘lam by al-Zarkali (vol. 7, p. 161), and Mu‘jam al-Mu’allifin by al-Kahala (vol. 11, p. 20). Fouad Sezgin does not mention them in his History of Arabic Heritage when discussing Abu al-Husayn and his works (vol. 1, part 4, pp. 86–87).
(1) He is Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Sina (Avicenna), author of treatises on philosophy, medicine, and logic; he died in 428 AH. The Shaykh (may God have mercy on him) said of him:
“Ibn Sina addressed topics in theology, prophethood, resurrection, and legislation that his predecessors neither discussed nor reached through their intellects; he acquired them from Muslims—albeit from sects claiming Islam while espousing atheism, such as the Isma‘ilis. His own household belonged to that da‘wa, followers of al-Hakim al-‘Abbadi, known among Muslims for their atheism—outwardly professing the doctrine of rafaḍ, inwardly concealing sheer disbelief.”
Among his many works is Al-Isharat wa al-Tanbihat (Remarks and Admonitions) on logic and philosophy, a brief volume presenting logic in ten methods and philosophy in ten modes; it is in print and has several commentaries, notably by Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, Siraj al-Din al-Umawi, and others. Cf. Wafayat al-A‘yan by Ibn Khallikan (vol. 2, pp. 157–162); Ar-Radd ‘ala al-Mantiqiyyin by Ibn Taymiyya (pp. 141–142); Sirat A‘lam al-Nubala’ by al-Dhahabi (vol. 17, pp. 531–536); Kashf al-Zunun by Haji Khalifa (vol. 1, pp. 94–95).
