the two manuscript copies, for the passage is reproduced in both of them from Nihāyat al-ʿUqūl by al-Rāzī in the following wording:
“lā yaʿlamūna kunahu fāʿilan li-dhālika al-kalām bi-dalālah, wa-law kāna al-mutakallim huwa al-fāʿil…”
where the phrase allāhumma illā (save only) has dropped out between the words al-kalām and bi-dalālah. He therefore excised that expression so that the sentence would run thus: “li-dhālika al-kalām, wa-law kāna al-mutakallim…”.
Again, on p. 213 he deleted the clause:
“wa-maʿnāhu fa-lafẓ maʿnā, wa-lafẓ yaqūmu bihi”
which the two manuscript copies preserve in the form:
“Naʿam, yashtarikāni fī kawn kull minhumā kalāman lil-mutakallim wa-maʿnāhu, fa-lafẓ maʿnā wa-lafẓ yaqūmu bihi, wa-hādhā ka-ishtirāki al-ḥayātayn…”.
I have pointed out every instance of this sort as it occurred during the verification.
[My work on the book and an explanation of the methodology I followed in editing it]
The method I adopted in editing may be summarized in the following points:
1 – I collated the three copies and chose the Taymurīyah Library copy as the base text, for reasons already stated.
2 – Whatever stood in the base text I retained as far as possible, unless—after close consideration of the passage—I found that what is correct or more appropriate to the context is the reading found in one of the other two copies (S) and (Ṭ), in both of them, or in the source from which the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—was quoting. In that case I insert the preferred reading into the body of the text and record the variant in a footnote with the formula: “In the base text: such-and-such; the adopted reading is from…,” so that the reader may peruse a sound text with ease and not be forced to hunt through the footnotes for the proper wording.
3 – When there is an addition to the base text—whether because it has fallen out of it, or because the discourse is not complete without it—be that addition found in one or both of the other copies, in the source cited by the Shaykh, or simply one I deemed necessary because of a lacuna in
