know with absolute certainty that this is a downright fabrication, just as they know the same about many other forged reports ascribed to him. It is enough to point out that no version of these statements attributed to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—appears in any of the hadith collections, nor in any Muslim work at all with a recognized chain of transmission. What is actually recorded in the books of the hadith scholars, with an authenticated isnād, is that Ibn ʿAbbās openly rebuked anyone who made such a claim.
It has been transmitted from [other] (1) routes through ʿImrān ibn Ḥadīr (2) on the authority of ʿIkrimah, who said:
“I performed the funeral prayer with Ibn ʿAbbās over a man. After the burial a person stood up and said, ‘O Lord of the Quran, forgive him.’ Ibn ʿAbbās sprang toward him and said, ‘Silence! The Quran is part of Him.’”
Another version reads:
“The Quran is the speech of Allah; it is not created. It proceeds from Him and to Him it returns.” (3)
This report from Ibn ʿAbbās flatly contradicts what they have cited. As for their own narrations, they are unsupported—neither from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—nor from any Companion or Successor whatsoever.
The same judgment applies to the other hadith, “Allah has not created any heaven or earth…” (4); it is not transmitted from the Prophet—peace be upon him—at all, but only from Ibn Masʿūd himself. (5)
