to the people of the earth, who then relate it—sometimes missing the mark, sometimes speaking correctly. The soothsayers proclaim it, but Allah has barred the devils from the heavens with these stars, and soothsaying has been cut off today; there is no more soothsaying. (1)

Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad ibn ‘Umar al-Razi said in his book “Nihāyat al-ʿUqūl fī Dirāyat al-Uṣūl” (2)—a work in which he claimed to have recorded subtleties not found in any of the writings of the ancients or the moderns, of those who came earlier or later, whether opponents (3) or supporters—:

= 12/182 (ed. Zuhayr al-Shāwīsh and Shuʿayb al-Arnāʾūṭ): “All these variants are known as kahāna (sorcery). The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) denounced them, censured them and forbade believing in them or consulting them. Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: ‘Whoever visits a kahin (soothsayer) and accepts what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muḥammad (peace be upon him).’ It is recorded in al-Tirmidhī, Sunan, 1:243 (Book of Purification, chapter on the dislike of visiting a menstruant, hadith 135); Abū Dāwūd, Sunan, 4:225 (Book of Medicine, chapter on the soothsayer, hadith 3904); al-Darīmī, Sunan, 1:207 (Book of Purification); and Ahmad, Musnad, 2:476. The editor of Sharḥ al-Sunnah (12:182) comments: “Its isnād is strong; al-Ḥākim authenticated it and al-Dhahabī endorsed him; al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī said in his ʾAmālī that it is ḥasan (sound).” (1) Also found in Muslim, Ṣaḥīḥ, 4:1750–1751 (Book of Greetings, chapter on the prohibition of sorcery and visiting soothsayers, hadith 124); and in al-Tirmidhī, Sunan, 5:362–363 (Book of Qur’ānic Exegesis, chapter “From Sūrat Saba,” hadith 3224). With this hadith the excerpt from Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād concludes. (2) Nihāyat al-ʿUqūl fī Dirāyat al-Uṣūl, manuscript, folio 130. (3) The term al-mukhālifīn is omitted in the manuscripts designated S and T. See the first folio of Nihāyat al-ʿUqūl, manuscript, Institute of Arabic Manuscripts (Cairo), for further discussion.
