Ibn Masʿūd—we put the question to him regarding the verse
“until, when panic is lifted from their hearts…” (1)
He said, “The inhabitants of the heavens hear a ringing like the clatter of a chain upon smooth stone; they collapse, and when the terror is removed from their hearts and the sound subsides, they realize that it is revelation. Then they call out:
‘What has your Lord said?’ They answer, ‘The truth.’” (2)
He also said (3): ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ narrated to us; my father narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us; Muslim narrated from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allah with this same wording.
And he said (3): al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us; ʿAmr (4) [who said, “I heard ʿIkrima say”] (5): I heard Abū Hurayrah say that the Prophet (6)—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Whenever Allah decrees a matter in the heaven, the angels beat their wings in humble submission to His command, producing a sound like a chain striking smooth rock. Then,
‘when the terror is lifted from their hearts they say, “What has your Lord said?” They say, “The truth, and He is the Most High, the Supreme.”’ (7)(8)
