Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh—someone said to him: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb (1) has spoken and declared, ‘Whoever claims that Allah spoke to Moses without a voice is a Jahmite, an enemy of Allah and an enemy of Islam.’ [That is to say, truly a Jahmite, an enemy of Allah. Concerning Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah (2) he added, ‘O misguided misleader! Who ever stood up for Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah? Who among the people kept a greater distance? (3)’ Abū ʿAbd Allāh kept questioning until he had heard the very end of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb’s words.] (4) Then Abū ʿAbd Allāh smiled.

(1) He is Abu al-Hasan ‘Abd al-Wahhab ibn ‘Abd al-Hakam ibn Nafi‘ al-Baghdadi al-Warraq. Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’ī, al-Tirmidhī, and others narrated from him; he accompanied Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) and heard from him. al-Marwazī said: “I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: ‘‘Abd al-Wahhab al-Warraq was a righteous man; may Allah grant others like him to attain the truth.’” And Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “May Allah preserve him; you seldom see his like.” He died in 251 AH. See: Tarikh Baghdad by al-Baghdadi, vol. 11, pp. 25–28; and Tabaqat al-Hanabila by Ibn Abi Ya‘la, vol. 1, pp. 209–212. (2) He is Abu Muhammad Musa ibn ‘Uqba ibn Abi ‘Ayyash al-Qurashi, their mawla, al-Asadi al-Matrafi, counted among the younger taba‘īn. He was declared reliable by Yahya ibn Ma‘in, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abu Hatim, and others. al-Waqidi said: “Musa was a jurist and mufti.” He died in 141 AH. See: Jarh wa Ta‘dil by Ibn Abi Hatim, vol. 4/1, pp. 154–155; Tadhkirat al-Huffaz by al-Dhahabi, vol. 1, p. 148; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib by Ibn Hajar, vol. 10, pp. 360–362. (3) The superlative “ashadd” is omitted in manuscript S. (4) The text within the brackets is an interpolation into the cited passage, present in all the copies I examined. The evidence that it is interpolated is: 1) none of the reports on this topic, with their chains of transmission, mention Musa ibn ‘Uqba; 2) in researching Musa ibn ‘Uqba’s biography, no commentary from him on the Word of God is found—he is only noted as reliable (as above); 3) the narration appears without this insertion in Dar‘ Ta‘rud al-‘Aql wa al-Naql, vol. 2, pp. 38–39, where it reads: “Al-Khallāl said: ‘And Abu Bakr al-Marwazī informed us: I heard Abu ‘Abd Allah—and it is said: that is =…’”
