does not speak with a voice:
“It was narrated from Yaʿqūb ibn Bukhtān that Abū ʿAbd Allāh was asked about someone who claimed that Allah does not speak with a voice. He replied, ‘Indeed, He spoke with a voice, and we transmit these hadiths exactly as they have reached us; every report has its own import. They only wish to confuse the people. Whoever alleges that Allah did not speak to Moses is a disbeliever.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Mahārib narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Muslim, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh (1), who said (2): When Allah speaks by revelation, the inhabitants of heaven hear His voice and fall down in prostration. Then, when the terror has been lifted from their hearts—he said, when tranquillity (3) returns to them—they call out, “What has your Lord said?” They answer, “The truth.” He said: such-and-such.’
This was also cited by ʿAbd Allāh in Kitāb al-Sunnah, and al-Khallāl transmitted it from him (4): ‘I asked my father about a group who say that when Allah spoke to Moses He did not speak with a voice. My father replied, “Rather, Allah—blessed and exalted—spoke with a voice, and we relate these hadiths exactly as they have been handed down.” My father also said, “In the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, when Allah speaks by revelation, a sound is heard like the clattering of a chain dragged across smooth stone (5). The Jahmiyyah deny it,” my father said (6). “These (7) are disbelievers who wish to mislead the people. Whoever claims that Allah did not speak is a disbeliever. We only transmit these hadiths exactly as they have come to us.”’
Al-Marwazī (8) relates from Ahmad the ḥadith of Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Marwazī said:
