And ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak—about whose leadership and eminence all the factions of the Muslim community are agreed, to the extent that it was said, “He is the Commander of the Believers in every field” ⦗1⦘, and that “Khurasan has never produced anyone like Ibn al-Mubārak” ⦗2⦘—studied under virtually all the leading scholars of his age, such as al-Thawrī, Mālik, Abū Ḥanīfah ⦗3⦘, al-Awzāʿī, and their contemporaries. On one occasion ⦗4⦘ he was asked, “By what do we come to know our Lord?” ⦗5⦘
“... and carried by noble angels ... angels of God are called Samumīna.
It was recorded by Abu Sa'id al-Darami in his al-Radd 'ala al-Jahmiyya (Refutation of the Jahmiyya), p. 27, and by Ibn 'Asakir in Tahdhib Tarikh Dimashq 7: 395–396. He relates the occasion on which it was said:
‘Abd al-'Aziz al-Majashshun said, “We have been told that Ibn Rawaha kept a slave girl as a secret concubine, hidden from his family. One day his free wife saw him alone with her and said, ‘You have preferred your slave over your free wife.’ He denied it. She then challenged him, ‘If you are truthful, recite a verse of the Qur'an.’ He said, ‘Ashhadu anna… al-bayt.’ She said, ‘Give me another verse.’ He said, ‘Wa anna al-'arsh fawqa… al-bayt.’ She said, ‘Give me another verse.’ He said, ‘Wa tahmiluhu mala'ikat… al-bayt.’ She replied, ‘I believe in Allah and deny the eye.’ Afterwards Ibn Rawaha went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and related what had happened. The Prophet smiled but did not reproach him.”
(1) His introduction appears above, p. 148. In al-Khatib al-Baghdadi’s Tarikh Baghdad 10: 165, Yahya ibn Ma'in is quoted as saying of Ibn al-Mubarak: “He is the amir al-mu’minin (Commander of the Faithful) in hadith.”
(2) Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi also records in Tarikh Baghdad 10: 155: “Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ghazi said, ‘I heard Muhammad ibn al-Wahhab al-Farra’ say: “Khorasan has produced none like these three: Ibn al-Mubarak, al-Nadr ibn Shumayl, and Yahya ibn Yahya.”’ He further narrates in the same source (p. 162) that Abu al-Wazir said: “I visited Sufyan ibn 'Uyayna, and they told him: ‘This was the wasiya (designated successor) of 'Abd Allah.’ He said, ‘May Allah have mercy on 'Abd Allah; none left behind in Khorasan like him.’”
(3) In the original it reads “Abu.” This reading is confirmed by manuscripts S, T, and the Majmu‘.
(4) The text between the quotation marks is an addition from manuscript T, as required by the context.
(5) In manuscript T it reads ta'arraf.
