and Egypt. Indeed, only one individual (1) during the era of Imām Aḥmad—this being the very first of the times (2) in which (3) innovations (4) specifically denying this began to surface—ever openly rejected it. Before that, there had already appeared those who denied it along with other matters, but the Muslims shunned anyone who did so, and such a person was regarded among them like a mangy camel.

Hence, if the one who swore intended what has been soundly transmitted from the early generations, he has not broken his oath.

I say: As for his swearing that the Most Merciful rose over the Throne, in the sense conveyed by

(1) Perhaps the Sheikh—may God have mercy on him—means al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali al-Karrābīsī, who, according to Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, enjoyed both friendship and rivalry with Imam Aḥmad—may God have mercy on him. Their relationship turned to enmity over al-Karrābīsī’s dissent from Imam Aḥmad’s position on the Qurʾān. Imam Aḥmad used to say: “Whoever asserts that the Qurʾān is created is a Jahmī; whoever says that the Qurʾān is the Word of God without declaring whether it is created or uncreated is a muwaqif; and whoever claims that vocalizing the Qurʾān is created is an innovator.” Al-Karrābīsī, ‘Abd Allāh ibn Killāb, Abū Thawr, Dāwūd ibn ‘Alī, and their circle held that the Qurʾān by which God spoke is an attribute of His essence and cannot be subject to creation; that the reciter’s utterance of the Qurʾān is an acquired action and therefore created; that it is merely a report of God’s speech, not the very speech by which God spoke; and they likened it to expressions of praise (ḥamd), thanks (shukr), and glorification (takbīr) of God, which earn reward yet remain distinct from God Himself. The Ḥanābilah distanced themselves from Imam Aḥmad’s companions, rejecting al-Karrābīsī’s view as an innovation and attacking anyone who endorsed it. See al-Intiqāʾ by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, p. 106. Al-Dhahabī—may God have mercy on him—adds: “He was the first to distinguish the term and to report that al-Karrābīsī said concerning the Qurʾān: ‘My articulation of it is created.’ When this reached Aḥmad, he rejected it as an innovation.” See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’, 12: 80–81.
