—fabrications that the scholars of hadith know to be false. Further clarifying this point are the widely circulated statements of the leading scholars of Islam—al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq ibn Rahuyah, al-Humaydi, and others—who vehemently censured anyone who claimed that the wording of the Quran is created. The reports documenting their denunciations are well known in the book of Ibn Abi Hatim ⦗1⦘ and in the work of al-Lalakāʾī ⦗2⦘, a disciple of Abu Hamid.

The wording of the hadith of the white-spotted camel: “I saw my Lord at Mina on the Day of Departure on a white-spotted camel, wearing a woolen jubbah, before the people.”
Ali al-Qari commented: “Fabricated, with no basis.”

It appears in another version: “I saw my Lord – ʿAzza wa-Jall – on a red camel with an izār upon it, and He said: ‘I have heard; I have forgiven all except injustices.’ When the night of Muzdalifah comes, He does not ascend to the lowest heaven, and the people depart to Mina.”
Ibn al-Jawzī – may God have mercy on him – states after quoting it: “This is a hadith whose fabrication no one disputes; its absurdity alone suffices without examining its transmitters. Even if reliable narrators had reported it, it would be rejected, for the Messenger is free from attributing to God – ʿAzza wa-Jall – what is impossible for Him. Moreover, most of its narrators are unknown or weak.
Muḥammad ibn Nāṣir told us from Yaḥyā ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Mundah that he said: ‘The hadith of the camels is false and fabricated on the Messenger of God – sallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.’”
