—and of those possessed of spiritual knowledge—claiming that they are Nāṣibah (1); the Qadariyyah, for their part, allege that they are Jabriyyah (2); the Jahmiyyah insist that they are Mushabbihah; and those who spurn the hadith and repudiate its adherents brand them Nābitah (3), Ḥashwiyyah, guthāʾ (4), and ghithar (5), along with countless other fabricated epithets (6).
(1) A group who harbor animosity towards Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions; they have directed enmity against them and displayed their opposition. See: Taj al-‘Arūs by al-Zabīdī, vol. 1 p. 487 (s.v. Nasb); al-Kulliyyāt by Abū al-Baqā’ al-Kāfawī, vol. 4 p. 363.
(2) In the manuscripts designated S and T the verb appears as tahkī (‘she relates’), omitting the conjunction wa-.
(3) al-Nābiṭah and al-Nawābiṭ: derogatory titles that Ahl al-Sunnah hurled at the innovators, literally “wild shoots”—i.e. worthless sprouting seeds. See: Fath Rabb al-Barriyya bi-Talkhīṣ al-Hamawiyya by Ibn Uthaymīn, p. 110.
(4) al-Ghathā’: the chaff carried by a torrent. al-Zajjāj defines it as the ruined, withered leaf matter which, when the flood flows, appears mixed with its foam. See: Lisān al-‘Arab by Ibn Manẓūr, vol. 15 pp. 115–116 (s.v. ghathā).
(5) al-Ghutharā’ and al-Ghuthar: the basest of people; singular: aghthar. See: Lisān al-‘Arab by Ibn Manẓūr, vol. 5 p. 7 (s.v. ghathar).
(6) As when the Murji‘ah were called al-Shakkākiyya (“the Doubters”) and the Ash‘arites al-Mujassimah (“the Anthropomorphists”), and other such epithets that innovators assigned to Ahl al-Sunnah—these are collected by al-Saksakī in his Al-Burhān fī Ma‘rifat ‘Aqā’id Ahl al-Adyān, pp. 517–519 (ed. Dr. ‘Alī b. Ḥasan Nāṣir). He (may Allah have mercy on him) prefaced the list by saying: “Each sect of deviation has given it a name that does not accord with the truth, out of envy, slander, and attributing to it beliefs it does not hold.” He then clarifies: “All of this is false regarding it; rather it is the saved, rightly guided sect, whose creed is the correct belief and clear faith revealed in the Quran, affirmed by the Sunnah, and unanimously agreed upon by the scholars of the Ummah of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamā‘ah.”
