Abu Bakr al-Marwadhi—the disciple most closely attached to Imam Ahmad in this matter—compiled a large, comprehensive treatise (1). Abu Bakr al-Khallal later reproduced it in his book al-Sunnah, which gathers the statements of Imam Ahmad and other leading Muslim scholars on issues of creed. At that time, some scholars of hadith (2) had declared, by way of rebuttal to those who said, “My articulation of the Quran is created,” that “My articulation of the Quran is uncreated.” When this reached Imam Ahmad, he vehemently rejected (3) that claim and branded as innovators those who
‘…so he is an innovator (mubtadi‘). Ibn Jarir said: “There is no view among us more permissible to state on this matter than his, if we have no imam to follow besides him; in him lie sufficiency and conviction, and he is the followed imam (al-imam al-mutabi‘).”
Abdullah reported from his father, Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), some of his statements on the issue of literalism (*lafziyyah*) in the book al-Sunnah, pp. 28–29. Al-Khallal also records in his manuscript of al-Sunnah (folio 187 ff.) additional statements of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), noting that it is a *Jahm* position to say “We describe the Quran’s wording as created,” and an innovation (*bid‘ah*) to say “It is not created.”
(1) The discussion of this treatise has been presented above.
(2) Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) states in Dar’ Ta‘rūd al-‘Aql wa al-Naql 1:262:
“The people of hadith have disagreed on this issue. One group said, ‘We describe the Quran’s wording as created,’ intending that the audible Quran is not created. They do not mean the servant’s voice, as is reported of Abu Hatim al-Razi, Muhammad ibn Dawud al-Musayyisi, and others.
Among their followers are those who include the servant’s sound or action in this ruling or remain undecided. Some imams understood this to mean, ‘The actions and sounds of the servants are created,’ in refutation of that group, as al-Bukhari, Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Marwazi, and others among the people of knowledge and the Sunnah did.
Due to the extensive debate, shared terminology and personal inclinations led to a kind of division and trial.”
Ibn Qutaybah mentions in his book Ikhtilaf al-Lafz, within the collection al-‘Aqā’id al-Salaf compiled by ‘Ali Sami al-Nashash and ‘Ammār al-Ṭalabi, pp. 245 ff., the differences among the people of hadith on this matter.
(3) The censure by Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) and other imams of the Sunnah of these positions—and their labelling of them as innovators—is mentioned by Shaykh al-Islam in Dar’ Ta‘rūd al-‘Aql wa al-Naql 1:260–261.
