from men’s hearts than a camel slips away once its leg-rope has been loosed (1).
The Prophet ﷺ also said, “The cavity that contains nothing of the Quran is like a ruined house” (2).
Everything between the two covers of the muṣḥaf that the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—wrote down is the speech of Allah, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not take the Quran on a journey into enemy territory, for fear that it might fall into their hands” (3).
This succinct statement is enough for a Muslim on this issue.

(1) This hadith in this wording is recorded by Muslim in his Sahih (vol. 1, p. 544; Kitab al-Salat al-Musafirin wa Qasriha; chapter on the Virtues of the Quran and related matters; Hadith no. 28), which includes the phrase min al-niam bi-aqliha (“one of the blessings is in its understanding”). It begins: “Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ‘How wretched is he who says, “I have forgotten such-and-such verse,” whereas he has simply forgotten—revive the Quran…’” It is also transmitted by al-Bukhari (vol. 6, p. 109; Kitab Fada’il al-Quran; chapter on Reviewing and Preserving the Quran), with only minor variations in wording.
(2) Reported by al-Tirmidhi from Ibn Abbas: the Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “He in whose chest there is nothing of the Quran is like a ruined house.” Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih (good and authentic). (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, vol. 5, p. 177; Kitab Fada’il al-Quran; chapter 18; Hadith no. 2913). It is also narrated by al-Darimi and Ahmad (may Allah be pleased with them) from Ibn Abbas with the wording “Indeed, the man who….” (Sunan al-Darimi, vol. 2, p. 308; Kitab Fada’il al-Quran; chapter on the Virtue of One Who Recites the Quran; Hadith no. 3309) and by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (vol. 1, p. 223).
(3) Its classification was previously established on p. 440.
(4) All manuscripts read kala itlaqayn, though the reading affirmed in the compilation is likely correct.
