Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

in the Qur’an, designating it Speech and never designating it creation. He said (1):

“Then Adam received from his Lord words” ⦗2:37⦘ (2);

and He said:

“A party of them used to hear Allah’s Speech” ⦗2:75⦘ (3);

and He said:

“When Moses came at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him” ⦗7:143⦘ (4);

and He said:

“Indeed, I have chosen you above all people with My messages and with My Speech” ⦗7:144⦘ (5);

and He said:

“And Allah spoke to Moses directly” ⦗4:164⦘ (6);

and He said:

“So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet—who believes in Allah and His words” ⦗7:158⦘ (7).

Allah—Mighty and Majestic—has thus informed us (8) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, believed in Allah and in Allah’s Speech. He also said:

“They wish to alter Allah’s Speech” ⦗48:15⦘ (9);

and He said:

“Say, ‘If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord…’” ⦗18:109⦘ (10);

and He said:

“If any of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection until he hears Allah’s Speech” ⦗9:6⦘ (11).

He did not say, “until he hears Allah’s creation.” This explicit text (12), in a clear Arabic tongue, needs no commentary; it is self-evident, and all praise belongs to Allah (13).

I say: This shows that Allah (14) has called it Speech in many passages,

(1) In the original manuscript (S) it reads “s,” whereas in the Refutation of the Jahmiyyah it reads “qawluhu,” a reading confirmed by the printed edition (T). (2) Surah al-Baqarah, verse 37. (3) Surah al-Baqarah, verse 75. (4) Surah al-Araf, verse 143. (5) Surah al-Araf, verse 144. (6) Surah an-Nisa, verse 164. (7) Surah al-Araf, verse 158. (8) In both S and T it reads “akhbara.” (9) Surah al-Fath, verse 15. (10) Surah al-Kahf, verse 109. In the Refutation of the Jahmiyyah it reads: “Lanafid al-bahru qabla an tanfida kalimatu rabbi” (“The sea will be exhausted before the words of my Lord are exhausted”). (11) Surah at-Tawba, verse 6. (12) In the Refutation of the Jahmiyyah: “fa-hadhihi nusus” (“These are scriptural proofs”). (13) In the Refutation of the Jahmiyyah: “bi-hamdi Allah” (“All praise is due to God”). (14) In both S and T it reads “Allah idha.”
